The Rujum winery is a boutique winery, reviving the ancient tradition of wine making in the desert.
The Nabataeans and Byzantines, who resided in the area over 2000 years ago, discovered the quality of the region’s grapes and a robust wine culture flourished. The high desert plains, from 600-1000 meters (2000-3200 feet), produce excellent grapes, due to the loose soil, bright sunshine and the extreme temperature difference between night and day and seasons of the year.
After generations of mainly traditional agriculture in the Negev, traditional wine has been revived. Hundreds of acres of vineyards have recently been cultivated on remote farms in the Negev highlands.
Rujum in Aramaic means cairn, a term used for a man-made pile or stack of stones used as a road mark. Rujum were used by desert nomads to mark their paths in the ancient days. The Nabateaens used to grow the vines inside these stone piles, to shade and maintain low temperatures for the vines during hot desert days. It was also used as an irrigation system to preserve water.
At the Rujum winery, we’ve created an exquisite wine boutique featuring a variety of wines, aged in French Oak barrels prior to bottling, for further aging on the shelf. Our wines are produced from locally grown grapes with a special emphasis placed on using all natural methods of growth and production. Our vineyard uses ecological watering methods, by using recycled water from a nearby town.
Rujum wines are Kosher by trust, and as of 2011 vintage, is the first winery in Israel under the supervision of the Conservative Movement.
